Shim for v1 15.15 carb? (5 replies)

I picked up a dellorto sha 15.15 clone that i wanted to try on the v1.

However the 18.9mm opening will not fit on the stock v1 intake manifold. (too loose)

Is there a shim out there I can buy to make it fit, or do I need a whole new manifold?

15mm Bing on Kreidler mp-9?? (7 replies)

Seriously thinking of buying this 15mm Bing from treatsland, some 70s jets, and the 1.5mm SHA shim and attempting to mod my stock intake just like in the wiki article. Genuine Bing not clone...

Was wondering is this worth the $ and effort and what kind of performance increase I can expect? Hitting low 30s now all stock. (I did remove the baffle and airfilter -- should probably upjet right??) Would love to see 40+. Is this attainable? Any other suggestions? Rear / front sprocket combo? Pipe?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Wondering if the bernardi wheels fit on motobecane without too much trouble? Im sure there will be some spacing etc. needed to take place

Anyone done this with stock forks/bike and also wondering if anyone has done it with EBR fork upgrade? Looking at doing that sooner than later also.

Malossi Cylinder kit problems Express NU50 (1 reply)

I just installed the Malossi 70cc kit on a running urban express, I haven't put in the jets yet was hoping to get some confirmation that it would start without before I did the carb. I've had it apart once already to ensure that I had the piston oriented correctly, I don't feel a lot of push when I cover the spark hole while cranking, I'm going to try to test compression this weekend, anyone have a number? or any ideas?

Best mild, reliable kit for an Urban Express? (10 replies)

Hello,
Timing is everything. I just placed my first ever Treats order last week, for new tires and tubes for my Urban Express. Ugh.
Now that there's a sale going on, can I call on the collective wisdom of this group? My '82 Urban Express is bone stock. I'm considering a big bore kit, but only if I can keep the stock exhaust. I would also like to keep the stock carb and continue to use the oil injection. I don't mind re-jetting, and I would be happy with a 40 mph bike. Does this kit exist? Can you recommend a kit from Treats that fits these requirements?

I've read some of the build threads here, but it seems like most people are looking for major gains, and using aftermarket pipes. I would be happy with 40 MPH, but if I would need to go to an aftermarket exhaust, for either fitment or flow, I will likely keep it stock.

Thanks!

Temperature range for 2 stroke? (9 replies)

What is an appropriate temperature range for a 2 stroke moped?

I'm running a Tomos A3, everything stock except for Biturbo exhaust and #60 jet. I purchased a trail tech temperature guage and am curious what an appropriate range is?

Minor adjustments to stock e50 (8 replies)

Recently added a high flow filter and boss pipe to stock e50.
low end is reasonable, I did notice loss of power and the high end does pull much more.

I'd like to throw on a 14t front sprocket and switch out the 2 shoe clutch with a three shoe blue spring clutch. Stock is 16t x 45t

I expect this to give me better low end, after reading up on the gearing spreadsheet and wiki resources, and the clutch engages closer to powerband. Is this true?

Will the boss pipe keep my rpm up for better top speed, maybe 32-34 mph, or will I lose that? Before my stock crank and seals blow, if they do.

Will these adjustments affect my jetting? They shouldn't, right?

I bought my a55 Tomos sprint with a techno bullet on it. I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a new pipe cause this one has gotten it's use out of it. Also I'm running a foam air filter. Also what jets do you find work best with the pipe you're recommending.

Stock tomos usually have 16x2.25 with 26x24 gearing, what would you rationalize would be best for 17 wheel with 2.75 tires? I'm running 27x22 right now....

I am new to this and I now have 4 mopeds. My first one was a Solo Odyssey and I got it running and working right so I want to daily it. I also got a Honda Express that had like 44,000 miles on it and was pretty rough, so I really want to do a gy6 swap. I am not sure what I should buy, so a list or any information regarding this would be very helpful, Thanks.

faster with exhaust leak? (2 replies)

Too rich??

Developed a decent size exhaust leak a couple days ago, at the cylinder you know.

Now with the leak, I was able to hold a steady 34-37mph in hot weather riding, throughout the entire 6 mile ride.

I fixed the exhaust leak so its about 94% sealed (fucked threads) and now it's back to struggling to hover around 31 in hot weather. Given enough time, it will still reach the 35ish range, however it takes much longer to rev now.

While doing all of this, I made no changes to jetting, timing, filtration, or anything else other than fixing the leak.

What y'all think?

Hi Guys,

I'm from the UK and looking at kitting my e50. I already did a full rebuild on the bottom end with fresh bearings, seals and a rito crank. I'm still running the stock top end with the only change being a metal mesh filter and techno circuit exhaust. I've been looking at this kit:

http://www.ypvspares.com/Puch_MAXI_70cc_Reed_Valve_Cylinder_kit_with_Manifold/p1208263_5659625.aspx

But I'm not entirely sure what it would translate into state side. The moped scene is tiny in the UK and I just wondered if it was worth bothering with or if I should just get this Airsal instead?

Thanks for any replies.

vespa variator tuning (9 replies)

ok trying to get my grande to variate all the way and start when the pipe hits. stock cyl running a uni foamed 12.12 and an old sito vai-vai chopper pipe 54 jet. I think it's the 30 mph version (besides sticker how would could I find out?)

first variated bike so I'm still newbing with the vari shi, haven't had the bike long. so far have only messed with the front vari. I notched the roller housing conservatively and ground the bushing down. no difference really.
one of the weights was missing a plastic cover half, not sure if this would fuck anything up?

I'm thinking about buying lighter weights to tune with. anybody have a good place to start in terms of weight/size/brand?

last dumb question how close should the front cheeks be when the bike isn't running?

Sudden loss of power (4 replies)

Recently installed a new top end to my moped (all new piston, rings, wristpin, and cylinder) and the bike has been running dependably and seemingly healthily. There are a few hiccups though that I'd like to run by the community. I realize from past posts that the only way to get real answers/diagnoses is to be specific and clear about the setup, so here's mine:

'78 Batavus
M48 Laura Engine (30mph version)
Stock new cylinder
New piston, rings, wristpin
NOS cylinder head
Exhaust- MLM People's performance pipe for Batavus
Carburation - Stock Encarwi (with small vent hole mod at top of float bowl, referenced in http://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Batavus_performance Section: Fuel system cleanliness)
58 jet (stock break-in size)
Stock air box
New condenser, externally mounted
Timing appears advanced by previous owner
Cleaned points/gapped to spec
Spark plug, NGK B7HS gapped to spec
Tail/brake lights are currently out (have been for some time, new bulb replacement did not fix issue)

Sudden Loss of Power:
I was riding last night on a high speed road in Boston maintaining approx. 30mph, fluctuating throttle (not riding completely WOT the whole way). Engine gets hot, steadily maintaining temps around 245 - 265 degrees F (with temps rising at idle). Coming down a flat stretch in about 30 degree weather, all of the sudden the bike just loses power (seemed like it was going to stall) with WOT applied at approx. 260 degrees engine temp. I came off the throttle a bit and was able to catch the engine again on its way out, rode for another quarter mile as I witnessed my temps rise rapidly to a max of 315 degrees at which I shut off my engine. I watched my temps (engine off) climb to a max of 325 before gradually cooling and going down. I waited until the bike was at 250 degrees and started it back up, taking it the additional half mile back to my apartment where the final recorded temp was 275 degrees. What does this sound like? Does anyone have a potential explanation for this sudden loss of power and rapid heating?

I am open to any insight and would love to follow up with anybody who can help me find a resolution/steps to fixing and further preventing this phenomenon from happening again.

Vespa Grande build, opinions please!!! (15 replies)

Hey guys, new to the forum here and wanna say hi!

I'm looking at doing an all out build on my 79 Vespa grande but would like some opinions before I order parts. Firstly, im looking at treatland, and was gonna buy the Malossi reed valve engine case, but do I go points or cdi? If I change to cdi what do i really gain? Secondly if i'm building the entire engine is there any advantages from a 10mm kit to a 12mm kit? Also I plan on getting the reinforced Malossi crank and the 19 mm PHGB carb kit. What do you guys think?

Thanks again, I'm really looking forward to this build and getting to know you guys!

Gigantor chamber or People's pipe on Minarelli V1 (no replies)

I'm considering pipe options for my Blanco, and other than the People's pipe I haven't seen many that I really like. The engine is a freshly rebuilt roller V1 with a lightly ported (basically just matched) Polini and a VM20 geared 10/38. It's my city bike and I want to keep decent lowend. I was thinking of going with the treats Gigantor chamber matched to 12-13" header (probably Tomos).

I'd love to hear some combos people have used. I'd also love to hear feedback from anyone who has used the rear bleed V1 People's pipe on their setup.

Anybody knows which brake disc that can fit on the old Mike Thomas disc brake conversion adapter for the puch star rims other than the disc that it came with? I'm looking for a smaller diameter disc that might fit or something I can mod. Thanks.

hobbit DR kit jetting at 4500 ft, high desert (3 replies)

Here is a link to my previous post:

no-idling 4-stroking newly-kitted hobbit

I am starting this new one because the current issues with the bike seem to have changed, and because my repliers on that post don't love me any more (jk thanks guys). Quick recap:

DR 70cc kit, all new seals and gaskets
Boyesen CF reeds
MLM side-bleed pipe
stock intake & carb
about 50 - 70F air temps

I'm pretty sure I have eliminated leaks (carb cleaner test, and leakdown) and am getting a good spark. I cleaned the carb, installed a new float gasket and checked float height. It's possible the carb may still be malfunctioning (?). Finally coaxed it to idle by turning the screws. Running 88 90 92 jets on the stock Keihin during break-in attempts seemed to cause horrible 4-stroking. This last round I'm running an 85ish jet (1/32") drill bit, and even pulled the air filter out to see how it runs. Seems to run better (no 4-stroke) but still needs a little throttle to start (no choke) and lacks power. Runs better when it warms up. Have only gotten CHT to hit 320F after doing an easy 15 minute ride around the neighborhood. I want to put the filter back in and try 84 82 80 jets but am getting a little wary that is getting too lean. Regardless I will be watching CH temps like a hawk and will do at least one plug chop first time I go WOT.

Who has experience jetting a dr-kitted (or similar) hobbit at fairly high elevation? 4500ft so that would include Reno, Denver, Albuquerque, Cheyenne, Boulder, or any other "mile-high" pueblo.. Sorry to repost but I could not find any similar set-up in the spreadsheet.
