Squish band, polishing and skimming head (8 replies)

I decided to go ahead and rebuild the top end on my Kinetic motor. I rebuilt the bottom end but couldn't get it to run despite having 110 lbs of compression. Well will run at WOT with the choke on for about 2 to 3 seconds.

I'm now suspecting the carburetor. Maybe when I wrestled the engine out, I bumped the carburetor against the frame and some funk got knocked loose in the fuel bowl and clogged up a jet.

Anybody know what the float level should be on this carburetor?

Anyway I got the engine apart and while waiting on new rings and head bolts, I've decided to have a bit of fun and go crazy with this engine..

1) polishing the combustion chamber. I've heard this does something. Just a little bit more work with the buffer and it should be a mirror finish. Is there any advantage to polishing the head of the piston while I'm at it? Does this prevent carbon buildup?

2) Any advantage to enlarging the intake and exhaust ports? I read one of the WIKIs on here about enlarging both with a 1/2 drill bit. Any advantage to doing that or do I have to go with a bigger carburetor to see a difference?

I've also heard about polishing the intake port.

3) Squish bands and skimming heads: I'd like to increase the C/R but I've read make sure you don't reduce the squish band clearance.

I can get Sunoco 110 racing fuel if I have to. I mean at 100 MPG, it's not going to break the bank paying $5.50 a gallon for this stuff if I have to run it.

I watched a YouTube video so it makes sense and seems easy enough to check but does anybody know what the squish band clearance would be on a 49 cc engine?

If I skim the head, my assumption is I can shave it down to whatever as long as the squish band clearance is correct.
