Bizarre jetting? (no replies)

So, I've had my bike, a 1980 1.5hp Murray for awhile now and have been riding around having a jolly old time. Anywho, it's been running well and I've been having a great time. I added a new air filter to replace the busted up one it came with, but that is the only performance upgrade I've done. It continued running well after that.

So, fast forward, I decided it was time to begin working on upgrading the performance of the bike and figured first things first I should get some new gaskets for my Bing and new cables. I installed the new cables and opened up the carb which, to my surprise, was extremely clean. It actually looks like someone swapped out the original, as the new one is a 1/12/299 (not stock for a 1.5hp Murray) and the main jet was a size 82! The jet itself was not gunked up or anything.

I tried giving it a test drive today and, low and behold, sounds like it is 4 stroking. This makes sense, but I'm really confused why it wasn't 4 stroking prior to this? Like, what? Maybe the moped just finally realized it wasn't set up right, or maybe I have the new clutch cable on too tight? The whole thing seems strange to me.

Thanks again everyone
